Gracious is the word I’d use. From the moment the usual formalities like credit card and passport details have been dealt with, you shrug off the outside world and enter into a world of under-stated, pure luxury.
While service is always at hand, you are left alone to your own preferences. Being as independent as I am, I choose to roll my own suitcase to the room. I step into what seems like a mini-suite and wonder whether I’ve got the number right. There’s a lounge area and a huge bed with linen and pillows that make you want to dive onto it and sleep forever. Every detail has been carefully thought out. Open the cupboard doors and lights switch on. The robes are soft and white and cuddly. Flowers are fresh and the toiletries are from Occitane. There’s a shower and a bath and even a small table next to the bath to place your drink. In the evening the gentle door ringer announces the chambermaid who brings a small white chocolate in an embossed little box as a goodnight kiss.
I’m not a big breakfast fan but this one I can’t resist. The restaurant manager shows me to my table in the window and brings me a pot of hot, black tea. The array of breads, croissants and sweeteries make choosing a mission. There’s plenty of fresh fruit to start your meal and a selection of cold cuts, cheese and smoked salmon. There are sides like capers and preserves, mustards and sauces and hot scrambled eggs, pancetta and sausages. Juices are colourful and fresh and the sparkling wine brings bubbles to your day. But if this isn’t enough you can also order Eggs Benedict or pancakes for example just for fun.
With its pampering spa facilities where everything from hot stones to an Istrian wine massage is available and the outstanding cuisine from a kitchen run by Executive Chef Ana Grgic and Pastry Chef Mirjana Kozlina, you’re in the hands of professionals.
Hotel Esplanade is not just a place to lay your weary head. It’s a full-body massage of your entire being from the moment you step inside until you face reality on the streets of Zagreb when you leave. And even that, especially in the spring, is not a bad prospect at all.
